My First Panel Discussion: Navigating the Cybersecurity Landscape

Hello everyone! I am Yash Gorasiya, Associate Project Manager at The SecOps Group UK Limited. I have been working in the cybersecurity field for a year now and I have had the opportunity to speak at a few events in the past. However, my recent panel discussion on “Navigating the Cybersecurity Landscape: Charting your path into the field” was particularly a special moment for me as I was addressing a gathering at the chapter that I had founded and been leading for a year.

This event was organized by the Null VIT Bhopal Student Chapter on February 11, 2023, and was hosted on Instagram Live. It was an honour to join a comprehensive panel discussion with my fellow cybersecurity experts, Anugrah SR and Abhinav Pandey. The purpose of the event was to educate, the cyber aspirants of the institution on the current state of cybersecurity and provide a platform for them to ask questions they may have.

Over the course of 2 hours, we covered a range of topics, including penetration testing, digital forensics, threat intelligence, threat research, managerial roles, quality assurance, and technical writing. We also discussed the advantages and disadvantages of working in a cybersecurity startup and the vision for someone new to the field to take up cybersecurity entrepreneurship as a career. Additionally, we touched upon the topic of cyber warfare and shared our personal stories and challenges we faced when we first entered the field. All of us shared some of our personal stories and the challenges that we faced during our initial days in the field, and how we were able to overcome them. Touched upon Technical writing as a career in this field as well as my experience in The SecOps Group, from Technical writer to Associate Project Manager.

We also talked about recent cyber attacks and the impact they had on businesses and individuals alike. This provided the students with a firsthand look at the real-world consequence of cybersecurity breaches and helped to highlight the importance of taking proactive measures to protect against these attacks.

One of the highlights of the panel discussion was the opportunity to share the leadership lessons learned from our founders and managers. It was interesting to hear the different perspectives and experiences of each of us. As a project manager, I shared my experience in managing a team and the skills I have learned along the way. We discussed “Networking is king” and how networking with the right people helped us ease our journey in the field. We emphasized attending Cyber Security Conferences for better exposure and networking opportunities.

I was happy to have made an impact on my juniors and provided them with the insights I wish I had when I was starting out on my own journey in the field. It’s fulfilling to contribute to the community what we have learned and support the next generation of cybersecurity professionals. I am convinced that by sharing our expertise and experiences, we can positively impact the future of cybersecurity and guarantee that it continues to thrive as a secure field.

I must also give a special shout-out to Riddhima Rai for moderating the panel discussion excellently. The event was a great success and Kudos to the team behind the event from Null Chapter, and to all those who made this possible. I am looking forward to more such events in the future and can’t wait to see what the community will achieve next. The community spirit is strong, and I believe that together, we can make a difference in the world of Cyber Security.

In conclusion, participating in cybersecurity panel discussions is a great way to give back to the community, share your knowledge and experiences, and stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in the field. I look forward to more opportunities to engage with the community and help chart the future of cybersecurity.

As the cybersecurity landscape continues to evolve, staying informed and collaborating with others in the field is important. By working together, we can stay ahead of the curve and ensure that our businesses and personal lives remain secure. Whether you are a seasoned professional or just starting out in the field, I encourage you to get involved in your local cybersecurity community and participate in events like this one.

So, let’s continue to navigate the cybersecurity landscape together and chart a path to success!
